It sounds cliché to say “this year has flown by!” And, yet, that’s such an apt description for my experience of 2017. When I consider that there are only a few weeks of 2017 remaining, the voice in my head asking “Really?!…Are you sure?…Really?!” like an insistent child is so loud with disbelief that I’ll bet you can hear it.
There have been a lot of big changes at Galliard FBA Institute this year…and we hope there is still at least one more to come. In April, the consulting practice of our Co-founder, Lisë Stewart, was purchased by a large accounting firm and Lisë’s role with GFBAI changed to volunteer Board Chair. I stepped into the role of Program Director and Elizabeth became our Member Director – together, and along with the other members of our fantastic team, working to fill Lisë’s big shoes. Fortunately, Lisë’s leadership style that is supportive of succession had built our organization’s bench strength so that we could each be successful in our expanded roles.
So why are our fingers crossed for one more? This summer, we busily worked to submit our Form 1023 and other documents to attain official 501(c)(3) charitable organization status with the IRS. Whew – it’s a lot of paperwork! We believe our focus on educating our members (you!) and giving you access to the tools for success in your family business advising practice meet the requirements for an educational organization. So now we’re eagerly checking our mailbox for the official letter that we hope to receive any day. And we’ll be sure to shout it from the rooftops when we do!
That approval will open the door for us to seat a full board, expand our funding sources to expand our work and continue to build value for our members, and search for an Executive Director. So there is some more retooling in our future!
In the meantime, we’re hard at work continuing to support your success – for 2018 and beyond. Our mission to build economically strong communities by focusing on the foundation of those communities – the small family-owned and closely-held business gets the most traction when we leverage our work by supporting yours. So as you retool for 2018, be sure to make the most of the tools already in your tool box, including our Resource Library. You’ll find our November webinar, Family Business Advisors Tools Roundtable, rich in information for your practice and your client work. For example, you might consider using The One Page Business Plan to plot your practice’s or a client’s success for next year.
And lastly, as we reflect on a dynamic year, we want to thank you for your participation in our network. Your contributions in the forms of membership dues, webinar content, articles, tools, and spreading the word about The Galliard Way make our continued work possible. Together we are making a difference in the world, in our communities of practice, and in each other’s daily lives. Thank you!
